Reinvention Of Rajini

Petta is a movie made out-and-out for the Rajini fans and by a Rajini fan. It is a Pongal treat to see Rajini performing with no shackles or inhibitions. It is almost a reimagination of Rajini for future film-makers to take note(more)

This Superstar film is a solid crowd pleaser

Petta is way too long at 2 hours and 52 minutes, and could have done with some serious pruning, especially in its first half. Nevertheless, it's engaging because it is Rajinikanth's most coherent film in recent years. It has a sliver of a story, and its heart in the right place.(more)

Style! Mass! Style! Petta is a celebration of Superstar Rajinikanth. Go enjoy it.

We can safely say this is one of the most memorable Rajini films we've got. The film opens with a card: INSPIRED BY, PERFORMED BY, AND DEDICATED TO RAJINIKANTH. You can't agree more, and that's what the film is all about.(more)

Petta is less of a Karthik Subbaraj film, but it gives Rajini fans their Thalaivar in a way that they have been dying to see him, celebrating the Rajinisms.

This approach does make the film feel like a greatest hits collection of Rajinikanth, but that can never be a complaint. The film does have its issues, mostly narrative. It is overlong, and takes a while to get going (after a point, the college scenes become an overkill); the songs arent really necessary; you also wish the antagonists were written better (Nawazuddin is no Mark Antony, while Jithu seems to exist mainly for the mandatory Karthik Subbaraj twist) But, it gives us the Thalaivar we all love - in loads. And Rajinikanth has fun playing the role, and shows us why he is the Superstar - as he remarked in the recent 2.0, the only one. Petta succeeds where Lingaa failed - it sticks to the formula, but it also makes it feel fresh.(more)

A real Rajinikanth feast

In Petta, director Karthik Subbaraj proves that he's more a Superstar fan than filmmaker, filling the film with loads of Rajini-isms. There are punch dialogues replete, which will surely drive meme creators crazy in the days to come. Rajinikanth proves that he's still in sublime form when it comes to dialogue delivery and goes the extra mile in action sequences. His is the best-written role in the film, but one wishes that the others, especially the villain and leading ladies (Simran and Trisha), had more to do.(more)

Karthik Subbaraj delivers a satisfying film for all those Rajini fans. #GetRajinified

To sum it all, Rajini is in his best elements in Petta giving the viewer that satisfying experience. However, for Karthik Subbaraj fans, it may be a little less. The duration of close to three hours could make a few restless.(more)

Brilliant Rajinikanth brings Baasha back in Subbaraj film

Rajinikanth does not let anyone else take centrestage in the film, and the director wants it that way. Petta uses Rajinikanth right to the core; so much so, that the others fade in front of him. Almost all the characters are just set pieces in Kaali's game, which he wins it effortlessly.(more)

Rajinikanth of the 90s returns, riding this Karthik Subbaraj time machine

Petta feels like a true tribute to Rajniisms -- his cool glass flip, the cigarette flip, his look, his laugh and the title card that embodies all of this.(more)

A Treat For Fans Of The Star Makes You Wish It Had Also Been One For Fans Of The Director

The writing becomes better, too. I loved the big twist, which uses the legend of Rama to defeat a Hindutva stronghold, and it made me wonder if Kaali's reference to living in a forest for many years, almost like an exile, was another nod to the epic. We get a good antagonist in Vijay Sethupathi, whos far more convincing as a North Indian (he looks like a swarthier Pankaj Tripathi) than Nawazuddin Siddiqui (the primary villain) is as a South Indian. And no, the viboodhi patch doesnt help. Hes too puny for a Rajinikanth movie, too life-size. But then, I can't think of many actors who can play a convincing antagonist to Rajinikanth. Only Shankar got it right in Enthiran. The only actor capable of taking Superstar on is Superstar himself.(more)

Rajinikanth Shines In A Movie Made To Order

Rajinikanth of course can deal with either. And like other directors of late, Subbaraj uses an overdose of sycophancy to compensate for Rajinikanth's age. The villains know he has prowess because of how he sits on a chair, the sidekicks know something special is coming up because he is brandishing a pair of nunchucks. But these are minor quibbles, because all of this is building up to a dance and to 'Raman Aandalum' playing in the background.(more)
