2.0 - The dawn of a new era in Indian Cinema

2.0 is an important film in Indian Cinema - Here's Why

The glitz and glamour surrounding 2.0, India's most expensive film till date needs no reiteration but to the unknown, it is a spiritual sequel to director Shankar's visually path-breaking movie Enthiran, stars two of the biggest Indian movie stars - Rajinikanth and Akshay Kumar and has music by the Oscar winning A.R. Rahman.

Besides this home-alluring package, what makes 2.0 important is that when it hits theater screens on November 29, 2018, it will be the most ambitious 3D film to be released in Indian cinema. Then be it the Rs. 500 Cr ($75 million) budget or the leap in technology (2.0 is first film in India to be shot directly on a native 3D camera, to have used 4D sound technology, etc) - they all stand proof of the same.

However, 2.0 is worth much more than just its big budget and snazzy technologies and we at MovieCrow decided to analyze why it is an important film in Indian cinema and why we feel that Shankar's vision has every potential of bringing a new dawn in our movies.

Cinematic Evolution & Vision (Movie Makers' Perspective) :

Star value, great content executed on a nominal budget, hit songs are all reliable factors for a film to do good business in our country, but they have also been quick-sanding our movie makers into achieving the often side-tracking 'success formula'. Hence movies like say The Avengers or Avatar or Inception or even a Despicable Me never gets made in India, thus leaving the audience with little to no choice in movie content.

Thus, when a big budgeted movie like 2.0 focusing on the experimental genre of science fiction shows success rate, it could motivate more producers and directors into investing their time and money into think-tanks, experimental genres, cutting-edge tech and a lot more, that could enable the evolution of cinema in our country.

The Baahubali series has already done this for Indian movies especially the Telugu cine industry and 2.0, should it be successful, could change the game for stakeholders in the movie making business, particularly the Tamil film industry.

Theatrical Experience (Audience / Business Perspective) :

With increase in films becoming available on digital platforms within a few days of release and guilt-free piracy practices, appealing to an audience to walk into movie theaters, pay for the parking lot, splurge at the snack counter and spend that Rs. 300+ for a movie ticket has become the need of the hour.

With 2.0, while it remains an open question of how it would be received, if successful with its appeal of state-of-the-art 3-D visuals and surround 4D sound, it could redefine the term 'value for money' and what people expect when they go to the movies thereon. It could also leave movie theaters adapting to to the new formats of screening, sound and ambiance.

A lot more of such reasons make 2.0 considerably the most important film of Indian cinema, for it could make or break the evolution of movie-making business in our country.
