Kaala Audio Launch: Rajinikanth's candid speech about Failures, detractors & Politics!

With all eyes on the Kaala Audio Launch last evening, the event proved to be no less than what it promised to be and turned into a complete fan-fare. Amidst super-efficient crowd management and impeccable quality of live streaming made available, the undeniable highlight of the evening however remained to be Rajinikanth's candid speech, the evening was closed with.

Rajini straight-away dived into politics with his opening line; however it was about his political senior"This doesn't feel like an audio launch function. It feels like a film's success meet, and it is one. The last success meet I was part of was Sivaji, which happened several years back (2007). Karunanidhi had graced the occasion and spoke. I am one of the millions of people who want to hear him talk again. I hope and pray we hear his voice soon."

He then addressed the long ignored elephant(s) in the room to everyone's surprise and had this to say about his unsuccessful films in the past and being paired with heroines half his age! "...I was not well. At that time, people told me that if you keep your mind and body healthy, you would heal soon and I don't know anything other than acting. So I did  Kochadaiiyaan then (directed by his second daughter Soundarya Rajinikanth). The proposed budget was too high so I decided to release the film as it is. So that also didn't work well. I realised that I should work with intelligent people, but not with people who are too smart. Then Linga with KS Ravikumar happened. It was a story I really liked. It was about water scarcity. My only dream has been to unite the south Indian rivers. I would die peacefully if that happens. But that didn't work as well as we expected. Then I realized, one should be good but not too good. Both in real and onscreen. Also, I am 65 years old. I shouldn't be romancing heroines who are half my age."

At this point the normally diplomatic Rajini took a direct jab at his detractors, something he has been facing a lot of-late."After 2 of my films flopped, they said That's it, Rajini is over; they've been telling this for 40 years. They saw that this horse (referring to himself) has been running for the past 40 years, so its natural that people will burn with jealousy. But what can I do, is not me who is running, its you people and God who are making me run and sustain."

Rajini aslo shared the behind-the-screens story of Kabali and Kaala, while also hinting that Pa. Ranjith could be politically inclined (!).

Kabali BTS: "Pa Ranjith told me about a Malaysian don subject, I asked him to alter the script suiting me. I gave him 15 days. When I met him at that time, Ranjith told me there was something missing..he told me that it was a lifetime opportunity and that if he messes this up, he won't have a career. I realised he wasn't an opportunist but a true director.Later, I got an almost final script from Ranjith. I've never received one script in so many years except for Bloodstone. I was a bit hesitant about the don searching for his wife. I asked Dhanu sir's advice. He loved Ranjith's script. And we started with the project. I saw the film and told him that as a director you have won. But I don't know if I have won as a hero or a producer. I also told him not to ask opinions of fans for the first 2-3 days. The film went on to be a success."

Kaala BTS"..I casually asked Aishwarya if Wunderbar would only produce films with Dhanush...Dhanush said it wouldn't have been right of them to approach me..then asked me to finalize a director.  I heard a script from Vetrimaaran but the film is extremely political which I didn't want to do. So..I called Ranjith again. I told Pa Ranjith that Kabali was your film but Kaala should be 'our' film. I assure one thing, Pa Ranjith will not end his career just as a director but he will do something big in the society. After Antony (Baasha) and Neelambari (Padaiyappa), Haridada (Nana Patekar's character in Kaala) will be one of the best villains in my films."

The Superstar finally closed his speech with the most important topic of all - Politics (even though he had subtly made references here and there as seen above)

"Media people might think I haven't spoken about the most important thing (Politics), but the time hasn't come yet. It will happen when the time is right, it will happen effectively. Hail TN, Jai Hind."
