Maragadha Naanayam Review – Some high-points and mildly amusing for the most part!!!

Bharath Vijayakumar

With the number of horror comedies these days, the population of those who get shivers with a ghost on screen should definitely be dwindling. Maragadha Naanayam is not another horror comedy. It does employ spirits and ghosts but the intent of the makers is to present a fantasy comedy. Thankfully the film sticks to this and never tries to scare you.

Plot:

Anyone who gets his hand on the 'Maragadha Naanayam' gets killed immediately.

Much like this week's other release Peechankai, this film too has interesting ideas and shows glimpses of a lot of capability. The spirits finding their way into dead bodies while retaining their original voices is well thought out and executed. The choice of voices and actors too work out very well. The comedy actually clicks most of the time. But laughter never hits the roof at any point. Mildly amusing is how you would describe most of the jokes.

The Achilles heel of the film is actually the absence of any real tension on what is going to happen next. Whether this was intentional or a false note remains a question. But given the nature of the film and the fact that the hero is actually on a hunt for something, the proceedings needed to be more engrossing. The film also feels longer than it actually is.

The romantic track with an inventive twist does deserve mention, moreso because it remains that way till the end. It is understandable that young filmmakers these days are in most probability Ajith or Vijay fans. But this reference culture is getting beyond limits. And if they really want to donate a certain screen-time for their idols, it is requested that they atleast think of something interesting so that the scene remains memorable. At present it is no different from the statutory warning that comes up when someone lights a cigarette on screen.

Bottomline:

Some quirky fun, few interesting ideas and mild amusement for the remaining period.
