Success of Vijay's Theri is crucial for Tamil Industry

Theri is crucial for Tamil Industry

With Tamil film industry going through a financial crisis due to multiple reasons -- decline of satellite rights, increase in piracy and mounting production costs. A number of big budget movies are stuck in the cans until the outlook becomes brighter. Theri's box office performance will be under scanner to determine the funding for other big budget movies.

Vijay's "Theri" BO outcome will impact the business of Rajini's "Kabali"

Kalaipuli Thanu is producing two of the most anticipated movies of 2016, Kabali and Theri. Since the outcome of Theri could positively/negatively impact Kabali, it is believed that producer made all the efforts to bundle and sell both movies together to minimize the risk. As a result, distributors have been voicing their concerns about the high-handedness of how Theri's business is being done.

Video Piracy Risks

Another ongoing problem is piracy. Recently, there are 'thirutu' DVDs available in the market ranging from mobile camera print(after first show) to blu-ray print (for fans who could wait for weeks). For the recent release, Thozha, the piracy prints were available in the black market in record time. Due to the positive word of mouth generated by Thozha, piracy copies were downloaded online and DVDs were sold like hot cakes within 24 hours after its first day first show. With lack of any meaningful control, piracy continues to be one of the biggest challenges that Theri will have to overcome.

Theri will influence the budget of future big budget productions

Producers have been tightening their belts like never before. A long list of big budget movies are having a rocky start due to severe funding issues. Tamil producers are keenly waiting for Theri's opening and collection numbers to give them the necessary confidence to invest in future big budget projects.

In short, success of Theri is crucial to the recovery of Tamil cinema industry.
