Trisha Illana Nayanthara - Jokes Of (A) Kind

Bharath Vijayakumar

A proper adult comedy would definitely add flavour to the list of genres in Tamil cinema. Just over a decade ago adult humour seemed impossible without creating a stir. We had the likes of 'Boys','Thulluvadho Illamai' and 'New' raising eyebrows when these films released. But a lot has changed since then and here comes a film that proudly swags it's 'Adults only' certificate. If the promos were anything to go by you certainly would have a clue on what to expect from Trisha Illana Nayanthara .

Plot:

A virgin guy looking for love/lust. The last two words are interchangeable in the film as there is not even a blur that separates the two.

Cast:

G.V. Prakash is an absolute surprise package. Whatever image that we had built up in our minds through his music and general presence at public events goes for a toss. If this is not his alter ego and he is really just performing for the camera then it is a job that is well done. Anandhi is quite good too. The rest of the cast have very little to do except VTV Ganesh who continues to do whatever he has done in every film of his.

Funny/Unfunny:

One man's garbage is another man's treasure. So it is tough to pass a judgement on a film like Trisha Illana Nayanthara. If words like 'David Pulla', 'Bhaskar' and 'matter' spoken without batting an eye is enough to crack you up then this film is exclusively for you. This is only a minuscule of what the film has in store for you. Nothing is a taboo in this film where almost all the boys and girls have only one intention which is one of the basic instincts. And I am not talking about food here.

Having decided the target audience and the genre of the film this is nothing we have against the makers. But surely a lot more could have been achieved apart from the amalgamation of cuss words and double entendres. Take for instance the idea of 'Sengal Psycho'. It is such a quirky idea and has you in splits. So the potential to truly tickle your funny bone with humour is definitely there. It is just that the team seems to have been content with the laughs of the people who are titillated by the mere usage of any word related to sex on screen. Apart from such basic ingredients of adult humour you got to have something that would suggest that the film has a plot or atleast a thread running. If that is lacking then you need to pack the entire two hours with laugh a minute gags which is a huge ask. Just like how good stunt sequences alone do not make a good 'action movie' the very presence of adult jokes does not guarantee a good 'adult comedy'.

Bottomline:

The hero sees his girl and crushes a pair of milk packets, one in each hand. It is a romantic feeling he says. You either cringe in discomfort or whistle your throats out for this. If you are the former then 'Beware of Trisha Illana Nayanthara' and if you are the latter you have probably already got your tickets after reading the previous sentence.
