Tamil star actor and politician Kamal Haasan was was elected unopposed as a Rajya Sabha member with the support of the DMK-led alliance in June, 2025. Recently, Kamal Haasan's party the Makkal Needhi Maiyam (MNM) announced, “We are pleased to inform you that Kamal Haasan will take the oath of office and assume his duties in Parliament on July 25,” in an official statement from the MNM headquarters.

Kamal Haasan on Wednesday took to his official X account to share that he dropped by friend Rajinikanth's residence to celebrate his MP appointment. Rajinikanth and Kamal Haasan were seen embracing each other in the four photos that were posted. 

Rajinikanth began his career with the Kamal Haasan lead Apoorva Raagangal in 1975. Rajini went on to do many villain roles in Kamal Haasan lead movies, a screen arc initiated by their common mentor the late K Balachander. For 50+ years now, Rajinikanth and Kamal Haasan have maintained an extremely civil friendship despite being box-office rivals. 

The two septuagenarians continue to maintain a box-office hold in the Tamil cine industry, despite dabbling in politics. While Rajinikanth put a full stop to his attempts of entering politics in 2020 after he turned 70, Kamal Haasan who has been serving as the leader of MNM since its launch in 2018, is all set to become a Rajya Sabha MP in 2025, aged 70.
