Actor and Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) chief Vijay is facing a major personal development after his wife Sangeetha Sornalingam filed a divorce petition at the Chengalpattu Women’s Court on February 24. The court has accepted the plea and transferred the matter to the Family Welfare Committee for further proceedings.
According to the petition, the couple had reportedly been living separately for nearly two years, though neither had publicly confirmed the separation. Sangeetha alleged that she became aware in April 2021 of Vijay being involved in an extramarital relationship with an actress and claimed that the relationship continued even after she came to know about it, causing her emotional distress and leading her to seek divorce.
Sangeetha, a Sri Lankan Tamil raised in the United Kingdom, had been a longtime admirer of Vijay before meeting him during a visit to Chennai. The two later married in 2004 in a high-profile ceremony attended by leading political and film personalities. She largely stayed away from public life after marriage, and the couple have two children — Jason Sanjay and Divya Saasha.

The development comes at a crucial juncture in Vijay’s career as he recently launched his political party, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam, and has been focusing on his transition into full-time politics. As of now, neither Vijay nor Sangeetha has released an official statement regarding the case.
