Chandi Veeran Review - Passable Entertainer

Chandi Veeran – Passable Entertainer

Bharath Vijayakumar

Sarkunam made a very impressive start with Kalavani and Vaagai Sooda Vaa. Then Nayyandi happened. Hence Chandi Veeran becomes a very important film as we the audience hope that Nayyandi was just a slip.

Plot:

A youngster in the path of his father looks to solve a long standing water crisis between two neighbouring villages. And of course there is a love story woven around the central plot.

Cast:

Chandi Veeran is Adharva’s passport to what you might call proper commercial cinema. As the rural youngster he manages to stay afloat. His expressive eyes does the job most of the time. He definitely has to work on his modulation though.  Anandi fits in pretty well and does a neat job. Lal looks menacing but we do not get enough dimensions of his character, the adamance of which is the cause of the conflict in the plot.

Direction:

Chandi Veeran is definitely a much better and improved effort from Nayyandi. But it is nowhere close to the standard of the director’s first 2 films. The film actually has a lot of similarities to Kalavani, most notable being the characterization of the villain and the climax. But the refreshing charm of the director’s debut vehicle is hardly to be seen. There is a scene that involves kids capturing their cricket matches in a smartphone to refer crucial decisions!!! We wish to see more of this sort knowing fully well what the maker is capable of. Lal who is shown as such a scheming villain has no clue that his daughter spends a lot of time with Adharva. And even after he finds out and we expect all hell to break loose we have the lead pair getting cosy for a number. And how many more movies where the entire village changes it’s stand after a 2 minute speech from the hero!!! The best thing about Chandi Veeran is the immaculate length. Despite being a mainstream film with the expected ingredients in place it runs at just under 2 hours.

Bottomline:

Chandi Veeran is a passable and crisp entertainer. But Sarkunam is definitely capable of more.
