Indru Netru Naalai Review - Promising Debut

Indru Netru Naalai  - Promising Debut

Bharath Vijayakumar

A ‘C.V. Kumar production’ has now earned the reputation that it would almost never travel the beaten path. Indru Netru Naalai (INN) is no different.

Plot:

A time machine from the future gets into the hands of two youngsters from the present. What seems a boon at first, soon gets them entangled in a web of dangerous propositions.

Cast:

Vishnu continues to select scripts with care and as always makes sure he doesn’t get into shoes that are big for him. INN is another smart choice from him. Mia George who was brilliant in Amara Kaaviyam has limited scope here and she makes sure she delivers exactly what is needed. Karunakaran does make us laugh when he intends to. But there is a definite feel of him being a bit underutilized. T.M.Karthik as the eccentric scientist is very good.

Music:

Sci- Fi gives you scope to experiment and the boundaries are relatively bigger. There are interesting bits in the BGM from Hip Hop Thamizha. But the loudness irritates at times, particularly when we have the villain on screen.

Direction:

Ravikumar shows you promise and looks adept at handling this genre. The biggest problem with sci-fi in regional cinema is the authenticity. You have to get the setting absolutely right. The CG in INN is extremely good. Nothing out of the world but the Time machine itself looks very much believable and real. The director’s love for Tamil is quite apparent. The voice recording in the Time machine from 2065 is in chaste Tamil. The hero refers to English as ‘Other language’. Despite the fact that the comedy works quite well, there is a definite feel of underplay. It is the feel you get when an aggressive batsman plays it safe in the power play. You wish there was more fun and more scenes like the one where our heroes try to buy gold from the past. The scenes that lead to the heroine getting to kiss her own baby form are nicely done. The movie should have been crisper. The typical mainstream villain is a sore. There is a passing reference about the missing Malaysian Plane in a song. In an otherwise clean film the need to create a 2 second joke out of this real life tragedy is definitely a blot.

Bottomline:

A neatly made sci-fi that proves that this genre is no more alien to Tamil Cinema!!!

Rating: 3.25/5
