Uttama Villain Songs - Music Review

Listen to Uttama Villain Songs

This is yet another Ghibran's music album that will be raved by purists, while leaving the fans scratching their head on what they are missing to appreciate. The "Uttama Villain" songs neither follow standard patterns nor have catchy lyrics, which are usually the characteristics of popular hit songs. This makes it harder for average listener to get hooked to the songs.

1. Lovea Lovea

A catchy song with groovy beats that sets up the right pace with the help of Kamal Haasan and Sharanya Gopinath. The minimal experimental usage of auto tuned chants as a interlude also adds beauty to this song. Viveka's lyrics add instant catchy flavour to this track.

2. Kadhalam Kadavul Mun

A mild melodious number in classical touch, which may test the patience sometimes. Ghibran uses humming chorus along with other background instruments, which is the highlight of the song.

3. Uttama VIllain Introduction

The song starts with instrument arrangements necessary for a "viIlu pattu" event. The song begins with morsing, and also uses Theyyyam elements like 'Chenda melam' occasionally. The song is centered around the Uttaman's introductions.

4. Saagavaram

The song offers some advises in the form of poetic references to king, explaining how being immortal is actually a curse. The lyrics are interesting and thought-provoking.

Story Tracks:

5.Iraniyan Nadagam

It is Kamal's way of narrating the Iraniyan story in song format. The song could be a stage play about mythical Hiranyakashipu and Prahlada story. Kamal emotes himself through the songs. Kamal traverses through different pitches and tenors as he narrates the story in an engrossing manner. The blend of western instruments with the native 'Chenda melam' and south Indian instruments towards the end sounds great and in line with the intensity of the lyrics.

6.Mutharasan Kadhai

This track starts again with a villu pattu narration, which takes the audience into next story of Mannar Sadaya Varman, the righteous king who was thrown out of kingdom by Mutharasan. Mutharasan takes control of the kingdom and leads a 'Kodungol aatchi'. The bad king predicts that he has to face his end in a horrible way ("Gora Maranam"). In the meantime, he hears about Uttaman, who is Immortal. Mutharasan orders to bring Uttaman to his place to save himself from his bad time.

7. Uttaman Kadhai:

The song is about how Uttaman escapes death several times. The track actually starts in a melancholy tone for the death of Uttaman, but abruptly shifts to catchy chendai melam. The sounds of symphony and conventional instruments sync well. The play on words ("pambu kadithum sagavillai" and "Pei pei pei") further enhances the song.

Bottomline:

The songs are composed with a sense of purpose to aid the story that unfolds on the screen. If the objective of this album is to showcase musical virtuosity of Ghibran and Kamal, the album succeeds big time!
