Nanban Trailer Review

When Shankar announced that he will be remaking the classic hit 3 Idiots with Vijay, the immediate question in everybody's mind was "Why?". But, the release of trailer today puts all those questions to bed.
If you were one of those who found it difficult to wipe the smile off your face as you watched the trailer, that is the success of Nanban trailer. Many people who were sitting on the fence must be convinced by now to watch the movie on big screen for two key main reasons -- Vijay and Shankar.

Performance

The trailer keeps you engaged from start to finish. Vijay is looking cool and fresh in all the shots. The dialogue about the implications of AR Rahman and Tendulkar interchanging their aspirations neatly summarizes the movie. The reach and impact of this dialogue is even more when Vijay delivers it in his own style. Vijay's trademark treadmill dance is spectacular. Jiiva is as usual hilarious when he prays "Unga kitta distinction venum-nu ketkala, Pass panna pothum..." Ileana looks cute in every single shot. She is sure to capture the young hearts in her somewhat brief role. Srikanth narrates the story from his point of view. Hope this gives Srikanth the much needed break he has been waiting for.

Technicalities

Technically, the movie looks colourful which is consistent with the mood communicated through promos and posters. Cinematography of Manoj Paramahamsa is clean, crisp and got a rich sheen on every frame. Anthony has edited the trailer using lots of great shots ensuring smooth logical transitions supporting the director's vision. Shankar's is known for being razor focused on having a theme in every thing he does -- be it his movies or just a song picturization; this trailer is no exception.

Is Nanban loyal to 3 Idiots script?

With this trailer, Shankar has accomplished one important thing. He has set the expectations clear that the movie is not going to deviate from the original. It is better to get that straightened out 20 days before the movie release and not after the first show. Interesting tidbit fact is that the 3 Idiots script was finalized after revising it 43 times. The writing team was not convinced until every single detail was finely etched before they went for shoot. So, Shankar had no intentions of messing around with something that worked big time in Hindi.
