Un Samayal Arayil Review

Un Samayal Arayil - The Right Ingredients in Incorrect Proportions !!!
Bharath Vijayakumar

Both of Prakash Raj's earlier directorial ventures were remakes. His latest offering Un Samayal Arayil (USA) too is a remake of Salt N Pepper (Malayalam). Does the recooking of an already successful recipe stimulate our taste buds? Read on to find ....

Plot:

USA is  primarily a romantic story between two individuals who are past society's marriageable age. They have not seen each other and  food plays the cupid that brings the two hearts together.

Cast:

Prakash Raj is likeable as always. As the middle aged foodie whose facial expressions are synonymous to orgasmic pleasures on tasting a delicious dish he sparkles in both humour and understated romance. Sneha is too good as the hyper sensitive 'Gowri' who continues to be tormented unintentionally by her well wishers. Thambi Ramaiah and Kumaravel are completely natural and at home. The younger pair of Tejus and Samyuktha try hard to look convincing. Their supposedly cute interactions are an eyesore. That their portions look dubbed further mars the impact.

Crew:

The film has a colourful look and breezy feel to it throughout . The songs of Ilaiyaraja are pleasant and soothing. The length of the film too is apt but not the pacing.

The film starts of promisingly and the characters that get introduced seem interesting and unique. There are fine sparks throughout. But the film never takes off as a whole.  It is like we have to wait in a queue each time to taste a delicious food. The entire track involving a tribal seems disjointed and serves no purpose to the main story. Both Prakash Raj and Sneha play mature characters who cannot be taken for a ride easily. That  they are so easily made gullible by Tejus and Samyuktha does not look convincing. This trend of making bilinguals and trilinguals with  sizeable portions of the film having a dubbed feel serves no good to the viewer. Moreso in films such as this which rely on our relatability with the characters on screen.

Bottomline:

Un Samayal Arayil has delicious starters. The main course is colourful as well as nutritious but tastes bland.
