KADHAL RESET REPEAT Review - Ridiculous Romance Repeat!

Ashwin Ram

Premise: Jiya Shankar is a passionate musician who is in Scotland to participate in an international talent show, where she meets with an accident and forgets her past. Her boyfriend Madumkesh bringing back her sweet memories forms the remaining story.

Writing/ Direction:  A romantic drama with absolutely no love and relies only on human sympathies. An old-school subject that showcases how a soft natured guy gets his girl after secretly stalking her for decades. Such a foolish portrayal, where the hero randomly decides to travel to Scotland after dropping her at the airport, just to logically justify the action, we get to see a frame of him waiting at the UK visa office. Deciding the story taking place in a foreign country is just misusing the liberty of the production house. The worst part is, when he jumps off a mountain cliff to save the heroine, guy thinks he is Tom Cruise or what. These are mere examples of entertainment offered to the audience in the form of mockery. While the rest of the film is a sleeping pill, filled with crashing bore scenes and situations. Pity Arjun Ashokan to have chosen the script, his role brings in the tiny conflict that exists, but his exceeding screentime deteriorates the film further. Just a small moment is overstretched till the very end, certain portions involving bodyguards in the second half were painful to sit through. Not even a single earnest moment for the writers, as the film is so plain and basic as it can be. Just because the word ‘Repeat’ is in the title, how many times can we see the same crappy stuff again and again, the intended twists are so predictable and some even land funny, the climax for example. Every aspect is lazy, just for the viewers to be awake, guess the decision of making it a musical has been made.

Performances: Artificial performance from Jiya Shankar, at least her lip sync was on point. On the other hand, Madumkesh is stone-faced who doesn't express anything at any given point and his body language is very amateurish. Poor role for the established Malayalam actor Arjun Ashokan, his potential has been absolutely wasted, yet he might have had fun sight-seeing Scotland while filming. MS Bhaskar and Jayaprakash in a dummy namesake supporting roles. While the former irritates in the name of comedy, the latter struggles to bring in some seriousness to the movie as the writing is terrible.

Technicalities: Harris Jayaraj’s songs sound so vintage, he offers nothing fresh and his music reminds so like his early works, not in a good way though. His background music is somewhat better, but mostly repetitive. However as usual man has rocked in the sound mixing department, his quality is superior when compared to the toppling sound designs which we get from the young bloods these days. Camera quality is okay, does not match the foreign location standard though, plus the shots are ruined unapologetically in the post-production stage. Colour correction is terribly done at the DI table, with excessive highlights, contrast, etc. Nothing special from Anthony, he has just supported the director with a simplistic edit pattern.

Verdict: An outdated drama in the name of romance. A film with no redeeming qualities, either it is unintentionally sarcastic or outrageously boring, no efforts have been put by any department to make it any better.
