Simran's 'Dabba' dig on fellow actress creates furore ahead of Tourist Family's release

Over the last 8 years, Simran has done a variety of strong, and memorable roles in Tamil cinema, be it with direct OTT releases like Paava Kadhaigal (2020), and Mahaan (2022), theatrical films like Seemaraja (2018), Petta (2019), Rocketry : Nambi Vilaivu (2022), Captain (2022), Andhagan (2024), Sabdham (2025), or with special appearances in movies like Aranmanai 4 (2024), and Good Bad Ugly (2025).

Suffice to say that the actress who once ruled Tamil cinema as a lead act with her performances, and dance, is still choosing projects that bring out the versatility in her. In March 2025, Simran won an award for her negative portrayal in last year's release Andhagan. Taking to the stage, Simran shared a story about how she was disappointed with a text exchange with a peer of hers.

"This is a very emotional moment for me. It has been 30 years for me with this (film) industry. I'm very proud of myself. Thank you so much my God..I give credit to my God. Just recently, I messaged a female co-actor and I just said that 'I was surprised to you in that role'. Immediately I got a message from her saying 'Atleast its better than not doing an aunty role'", revealed Simran.

She added, "Such an insensitive message. Actually I did not expect. What I said (to her) was my opinion, but I could have gotten a better answer I felt. But I feel that its better to do 'aunty roles' and 'main aunty roles', mother of 25 years (old)—that I have done in Kannathil Muthamittal* also—than playing 'dabba' roles and doing nothing. That's what I feel"

*Simran at the peak of her career played a mother of three in the Mani Ratnam directed National Award winning film Kannathil Muthamittal (2002). Simran's move was bold for a Tamil cine lead actress at that point in time. Even today, very few actresses rarely take up such roles at the peak of their stardom.

Though the event was held in March, Simran's speech was posted to X only on Sunday. Soon, the Tamil movie buffs were deep in speculations about whom Simran was referring to. Simran's usage of the word 'dabba' has lead many to believe that Simran was talking about actress Jyotika, who is from the same generation of Tamil actresses as Simran, and has recently done a Netflix show titled 'Dabba Cartel'.

Incidentally, Simran's upcoming release Tourist Family clashes with the Jyotika, Suriya, and Karthik Subbaraj produced Retro at the Tamil box-office on May 1, 2025.
