Dragon director Ashwath Marimuthu clears misunderstandings about Pradeep Ranganathan starrer

Dragon is a Tamil comedy drama produced by reputed banner AGS Entertainment, and the movie releases in theaters on February 21, 2025 i.e. tomorrow. Dragon, jointly written by upcoming filmmakers Pradeep Ranganathan and Ashwath Marimuthu, stars the former in the lead, and is helmed by the latter.

Ever since Dragon trailer dropped earlier this month, there has been a wave of criticism flooding Pradeep Ranganathan and Ashwath Marimuthu's way. The main voice of disdain has been against romanticizing arrears in college, duping parents, and erratic youth behaviour.

Tamil social media did not hold back while putting the actor-director duo on blast, and now Ashwath Marimuthu has cleared some misconceptions about his movie. Talking to the IE, the Dragon director has said,

"This film Dragon is about the importance of education. It talks about success. What’s the point of telling this story through a character who is already successful? I need to show the arc, right?..The connection happens when there is a fall and a rise. Of course, I didn’t show the entire film in the trailer..."

In a previous interview with a YouTube channel, Ashwath Marimuthu had also shared, "Having arrears is not mass. That is what has been discussed in the movie Dragon. To develop the question of whether having arrears is mass or not, I have to show a character who thinks it is a thing of pride to fail in college examinations. Dragon is a movie that showcases what real life does to people like this."

The director concluded, "There is always somebody who is bigger than us, earning more than us. Everybody has somebody else on top of him. I wanted to give a definition of what success is according to my understanding. And that is anyone who is earning honestly be it Rs. 1000 or Rs. 10,000, is taking care of his family and surroundings, and is happy with his life, is successful. Dragon movie will give the feeling that "I too am successful" to an auto driver or delivery service person or a construction worker or any working class person who make for the majority 99%."

The U/A censored Dragon also stars Anupama Parameswaran, Kayadu Lohar, George Maryan, Indhumathy Manikandan, KS Ravikumar, Gautham Vasudev Menon, Mysskin, among others. The movie has Leon James for music, and comes with a runtime of 2 hours 35 minutes and 50 seconds.
