Ivan Vera Maathiri - An Action Film that does not defy logic
Bharath Vijayakumar
Director Saravanan made people take immediate notice of his talent through his debut flick 'Engeyum Eppodhum'.The film stood out for the message it drove home without compromising on the entertainment factor. In the lead up to the release of his second venture the director has made it very clear in his interviews that IVM would be entirely different from his debut vehicle.Well how different is IVM and will it create a similar impact like Engeym Eppodhum did? Read on to find......
Plot:
The basic line of IVM is not a novel one. But Saravanan has made sure that he leaves his stamp by making a commercial movie that is realistic for the most part. The protagonist is someone who decides to do his part in weeding out the corrupt from the society. But he is prudent enough to make sure that his identity is not revealed to safeguard himself and his loved ones.
Cast:
Vikram Prabhu is quite convincing as the serious youngster. One just gets the feel he could have been a little more casual in the romantic scenes. He seems to hold himself back in these scenes. And he definitely needs to improve his dancing skills. Surabhi the débutante heroine is extremely cute and expressive. The silly and gullible heroine running behind the hero has been done to death in Tamil cinema. Yet these scenes work in IVM thanks to the young girl's charm. The bad man Vamsi's physique makes him convincing and he does express brutality in his eyes. Ganesh Venkatram has only a few scenes and probably his role could have been given more weightage.
Technical Team:
Sathya does a neat job with songs. The BGM during the first duel between Vikram Prabhu and Vamsi comes off a bit silly. This probably has more to do because of the words 'Ivan Vera Madhiri' ringing in the background. For an action film the stunts are appreciably kept minimum in number and are neat. However the ultimate one-on-one between the hero and the villain does not create the desired impact. Sakthi's camera work has captured the action sequences in the under construction high rise buildings with precision.
Saravanan has cleverly made a film that is in complete contrast to his debut film. Though IVM is not a path breaking effort the young man needs to be credited for making a hero centric film that does not have the usual heroism involved. The leading man hardly speaks forget the punch dialogues!!! The first half is crisp and neat. Though there is not much to complain about the later half as well there are not enough 'wow' moments. And the few that are there are short lived. The melodrama and cliches also start to put their hands up towards the climax in the form of the heroine's behaviour. These small hiccups pull IVM back a little and tend to make the movie look a little longer than it actually is.
Bottomline:
IVM is a neat action film. A few more interesting elements in the cat and mouse game between the hero and the villain might have worked wonders.Nevertheless IVM still is ahead of the routine action films with logic being given importance.
