Why Kanguva is clashing with Vettaiyan this Dussehra 2024

Early June, 2024 Superstar Rajinikanth had unofficially confirmed that his next release Vettaiyan, directed by TJ Gnanavel, and produced by Lyca Productions is releasing on October 10, 2024. Vettaiyan's Dussehra release was officially announced on August 19, 2024.

Towards the end of June 2024, another biggie from the Tamil film industry i.e. Suriya's Kanguva was also announced to be releasing on October 10, 2024. Two big stars going against each other at the box-office has always proven damaging for either parties, considering that they have to share theater screens, holiday crowds, and also stand the risk of loosing both.

So when Kanguva release date was announced, Studio Green executive G. Dhananjeyan was asked about the thought process behind the decision. And he had this to say about why Suriya's Kanguva decided to clash with Rajinikanth's Vettaiyan:

"KE Gnanavel Raja (key person of Studio Green banner) told me out of the blue that Kanguva is releasing on October 10. He told me that a post on the same will be made by Suriya. We didn't question him why, because (October) 10th is a very important date. It's a holiday.

(October 10 is) followed by 4 days of government holidays..Even for Diwali we dont' have such a rare weekend, where Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday are bunched together as holidays. The only other date with such a weekend comes prior on September 5, which has been correctly chosen (by The Greatest Of All Time starring Vijay).

Another calculation that KE Gnanavel Raja had in mind is October 10 release date slot is available in Hindi, and Telugu (with less competition as compared to Diwali). Only in Tamil, Kanguva faces competition from Vettaiyan. KE Gnanavel Raja thought that the competition in Tamil Nadu could be managed, but we cannot get an open market (if release date is pushed to Diwali or any further).. Diwali wasn't possible either since there are already talks of Vidaamuyarchi (starring Ajith Kumar) releasing that weekend, which doesn't even have four continuous days as holidays.

October 10 was chosen keeping in mind that there should be no problems for a PAN Indian release of Kanguva (which also stars Bollywood's Bobby Deol, Disha Patani, and is co-produced by Tollywood's UV Creations with Devi Sri Prasad for music)...

Yes there will be division of theaters, and (box-office) revenue but since it (Dusshera) is a four day weekend, two films releasing on the same date shouldn't pose much of an issue."
