Padayappa: Rajinikanth, KS Ravikumar film gears up for re-release!

It has been 25 years since Tamil blockbuster movie Padayappa (1999) starring Rajinikanth in the lead released. The movie on which a good chunk of millennials, and zillennials grew up, is written and directed by KS Ravikumar and stars actress Ramya Krishnan in the famously villainous Neelambari role.

The 181 minute runtime movie is currently gearing up to re-release in theaters, and one of the film's producers PL Thenappan has even met with Rajinikanth to affirm the same. Padayappa re-release date is expected to be announced soon officially.

A penta Tamil Nadu state award winner, Padayappa has AR Rahman for music and is considered a cult hit in Tamil pop culture. The movie was the highest grossing film of its time, and was the first Tamil film to be released worldwide with 210 prints and 700,000 audio cassettes.

Padayappa's story revolves around the titular character - Aarupadayappan (Rajinikanth), whose family falls victim to a generations-long revenge saga. As Padayappa reinstates his family's status, his cousin Neelambari (Ramya Krishnan) initiates a new drama where she becomes venomous after getting rejected by Padayappa's family, and Padayappa marrying her mellow-natured home worker Vasundhara (Soundarya).
