Ever since it was first officially announced in 2021, former Indian cricketer Sourav Ganguly's biopic never seemed to gather steam in terms of cast and crew. As of January 2024, the Sourav Ganguly biopic was known to be a production venture of Bollywood's Luv Films, with Vikramaditya Motwane directing it and actor Ayushmann Khurrana playing the lead character.

Aishwarya Rajinikanth who recently made a cricket based film titled Lal Salaam, had at one point been linked to the project. However in a completely new turn of events, it is being suggested that Soundarya Rajinikanth will be directing the Sourav Ganguly biopic, and actor Rajinikanth will be playing an extended cameo role in it, just like Lal Salaam.

It is worth mentioning here that Bollywood's Nadiadwala Grandson production banner recently announced a film collaboration with Rajinikanth, which is expected to be Thalaivar 172. It remains to be seen if Thalaivar 172 turns out to be the Sourav Ganguly biopic.
