Suriya 43 titled 1965 Purananooru? Suriya's role confirms anti-Hindi Madurai riot connect

Suriya 43 (tentative title) is an upcoming movie starring actor Suriya in the lead. The film, a home production of Suriya's 2D Entertainment is written and directed by Sudha Kongara and marks the actor, director's reunion after their OTT blockbuster Soorarai Pottru (2020). Previously we had reported that Suriya 43 will touch on the anti-Hindi agitations in Tamil Nadu, that were particularly significant between 1965-1967.

The official Suriya 43 announcement video that released on October 26, 2023 hinted that the 1965 Madurai riots* that broke out between agitating college students and Congress party members, marked by violence, arson, police firing and lathi charges, will be reconstructed in the movie. Suriya 43 title which was kept hidden also seemed to be pointing at the year 1965 (the four letters before Purananooru).

*In 1965, Anti-Hindi agitation in Tamil Nadu grew drastically owing to the support from college students in the state. On January 25, 1965 a clash between agitating students and Indian National Congress party workers in Madurai went out of control and became a riot, and spread throughout Tamil Nadu. Acts of arson, looting and damage to public property became common during this time and was carried on for 2 months since the Madurai incident. The results of this clash between college students and the state was reflected in the 1967 Tamil Nadu elections when student leader P. Seenivasan contested and won against former Tamil Nadu CM and the very powerful Kamaraj in the latter's own Virudhunagar constituency.

Latest we hear, Suriya plays a 'revolutionary college student' in Suriya 43 confirming the rehash of this incident. Malayalam actor Dulquer Salmaan plays Suriya's brother in the movie, while Nazriya Fahadh plays female lead. Suriya 43 has GV Prakash for music.
