Suriya 43 to touch on Anti-Hindi agitations of Tamil Nadu

Suriya 43 (tentative title) is an upcoming Tamil project which marks the reunion of team Soorarai Pottru (2020) i.e. writer, director Sudha Kongara, lead actor cum producer Suriya and music composer GV Prakash. Suriya's production house 2D Entertainment is all set to announce this film at 4 PM today.

At this time, buzz has it that Suriya 43 will touch on the subject of anti-Hindi agitations in Tamil Nadu (TN). Imposition of the Hindi language has been vehemently opposed to in the South Indian state of Tamil Nadu since 1937. One of the most significant anti-Hindi movements recorded in TN's history was the agitations in 1965, when students in Tamil Nadu carried out conferences throughout the state and indulged in activities like suicide by self-immolation and poison consumption. [The 1965 Madurai riots that broke out between the protesting students and the police was also a moment in history].

This inturn led to the Congress government loosing and DMK ascending to power in Tamil Nadu in 1967. [A powerful candidate like former CM K Kamaraj was defeated by a student leader in his hometown; such was the veracity of the public sentiment at that time]. The 1965 anti-Hindi agitation also ensured that TN followed a two-language policy (Tamil, English) in 1967, as opposed to the three-language policy proposed by the Centre.
