Jailer, Gadar 2, Bholaa Shankar, OMG 2 create Indian cinema history!

The Multiplex Association of India (MAI) and the Producers' Guild of India (GUILD) have announced that August 11, 12 and 13 has officially been the busiest ever for theaters in India. New film releases like Jailer (Tamil), Gadar 2 (Hindi), OMG 2 (Hindi) and Bholaa Shankar (Telugu), managed to rake in a combined gross of Rs. 390+ Cr. PAN India over the weekend. The movies starring 'Superstar' Rajinikanth, Sunny Deol, Akshay Kumar and Chiranjeevi respectively have also managed to pull in a footfalls of 2.10+ Cr, all across the country. 

 

By doing so Jailer (released August 10), Gadar 2 (August 11), Bholaa Shankar (August 11), and OMG 2 (August 11) have managed to create history, since this is the first time in over 10 years that theaters in India have been so busy. It is also the first time in the last 100 years i.e. a whole century since such high box-office numbers were generated in a weekend. A joint statement from MAI and GUILD reads,

National, 14 August 2023: The Producers Guild of India and Multiplex Association of India announced that 11-13th August was its busiest single weekend post re-opening. The weekend set a new All-time Theatrical Gross Box Office record for the Cinema Industry in its 100+ year's history. The weekend drew 2.10+ Crore moviegoers to theatres across the country, which is also the highest combined Admissions record in the last 10 year history.

 

Kamal Gianchandani, MAI President has also added, "Mainstream storytelling executed in the right way has resulted in the box office records being shattered. A massive achievement like this is a result of an incredible filmmaking team, with cast and crew coming together to create a truly special movie-going experience. The turnout at theatres has infused a new energy in our Industry, audiences are responding in numbers we have not seen for a very long time, even the early morning shows are getting sold out. This weekend has been a wonderful experience for people who love the mainstream Indian films" said Shibasish Sarkar, President Producers Guild of India. "It was a historic weekend, it proves once again that India loves going to the movies to see great films. This weekend is also an undeniable demonstration of Cinemas being the ultimate place to be part of a shared experience.
