Ponniyin Selvan 2 Preview: SWOT Analysis

Mani Ratnam directed Ponniyin Selvan 2 (PS-2) is all set to release in theaters on April 28, 2023 in multiple languages, and it is one of the biggest Tamil films to come out of Kollywood this year. SWOT analysis of PS2 follows:

Strengths

  • Ponniyin Selvan is one of Tamil literature's most popular works and there is a certainly a vast amount of shared interest in seeing Kalki Krishnamurthy's story on screen. PS-2 also has the success of PS-1 to rely on.
  • Besides the original story's popularity, the appeal for Ponniyin Selvan comes from the fact that it is a big budget period drama, mounted on a large visual scale and multiple star actors sharing screen space together. The movies are made for complete theatrical experience in a nutshell.
  • Director Mani Ratnam has already set the bar of what to expect from PS-2 in terms of filmmaking - the best of the multiple star cast without the sense of an over-crowd or screen-time concern, technicals, production - everything a movie-goer aspires to experience without any glitches. Even the lengthy runtime of the movie doesn't come across as a concern, given how hooked PS-I kept its viewers.

Weakness

  • Ponnyin Selvan is a Tamil-rooted story and the amount of interest surrounding PS-2 is not necessarily shared in non-Tamil regions where the movie is also releasing on a grand scale. This is despite PS-I doing well on home media avenues like OTT.
  • Unlike PS-1 album's chartbusters, AR Rahman's music for PS-2 is more on the mellow side.

Opportunities

  • The first film Ponniyin Selvan: Part 1 went on to become the highest grossing Tamil movie of 2022. PS-I also ranks in the top spots among the highest grossing Tamil movies ever, and this is a definite boost for PS-2 in terms of theater business.
  • PS-2 is releasing with little to no competition at Tamil the box-office. And at a time when Tamil cine audience haven't had celebratory movie since Varisu (Vijay) and Thunivu (Ajith). The summer holiday time should add to the box-office numbers along with these factors.

Threats

  • PS-2 though a PAN-Indian release has only made waves with the Tamil section of the audience. In all other languages, where the movie has been equally promoted there is a definite lull in terms on anticipation.
  • Even in Tamil Nadu, promotions for PS-2 have not been as grand as they were for PS-I.
