Vendhu Thanindhathu Kaadu Songs - Music Review

Ramesh S Kannan

Gautham Vasudev Menon joins STR after Acham Yenbadhu Madamiyada in Vendhu Thanindathu Kaadu. Rahman has composed music for the film and the expectation for the soundtrack was raised multifold after the two singles were released. Let's check out whether the soundtrack lives up to the expectations from the combo.

Kaalathukkum Nee Venum

Kaalathukkum Nee Venum is a delightful hummable tune where Rakshitha Suresh shines with her fab rendition while STR manages to sail through backed by the stellar melody from Rahman. The showstopper of the song is the brilliant effort by Kareem Kamalakar and Kiran's flute solos in the interludes, which effectively bring out the various facets of emotions. Thamarai's simple yet beautiful lyrics flow seamlessly with the melody.

Marakkuma Nenjam

Marakkuma Nenjam is where Rahman teases us with the 90's sounds intermittently, making this song an instantly likable one. Rahman builds up the tune with the pulsating rhythm structure with some goosebumps-inducing terrific chorus portions. Rahman's vocals convey the emotions perfectly and reach a crescendo when the Thamarai's lyrics go as 'adhu Pola Podhai uNda engum'. Muthu's journey is the shorter version of Marakkuma Nenjam which is quite effective as the longer version, especially with the spell-binding chorus portion.

Unna nenachadhum

Unna nenachadhum is a lovely throwback to the MSV era tune embellished with gorgeous minimalistic arrangements dominated by string sections and guitar strums. Apart from the retro tune, Thamarai deserves equal credit for building up the verses which take us back to that era. Shreya Goshal and Sarthak Kalyani ace up the melody as usual with their rendition especially Shreya's high pitch portions are delightful.

Mallipoo

The soundtrack's surprise is Madhushree's Mallipoo where Rahman treads on to Gaana space but restrains much to Rahman's soundscape in the genre. Madhushree sings again in Rahman's album after Ay Sakhi in 2013 and despite the questionable diction, her rendition brings enough joy as always especially when lyrics go as 'Machan eppo vara pora'.

Bottomline

Vendhu Thanindadhu Kaadu is a short but wholesome soundtrack from Rahman-GVM combo where each melody shines on its own and is refreshing to listen.
