From former Tamil Nadu CM MGR to Rajinikanth's daughter Soundarya, film personalities of various generations have attempted to bring the Ponniyin Selvan novel, that turned many into avid Tamil readers into celluloid, but couldn't for some reason or other. So much so that at one point, it was believed that Kalki Krishnamurthy's 1950s story is bound to bring doom to any who attempted at making it into a film or a series.

After years of unsuccessful attempts, Mani Ratnam is finally coming out with not just one but two Ponniyin Selvan movies. The filmmaker too didn't have it easy since originally he had planned the movie with Mahesh Babu and Tamil star actor Vijay. That combo failed to take off and now Ponniyin Selvan 1 starring Vikram, Karthi, Jayam Ravi, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and Trisha in the lead is all set for a release on September 30, 2022.
