With Rajinikanth's next film Annaatthe setting its release date for Pongal, 2021, there has been a buzz that the actor's 169th movie (Thalaivar 169) is no longer happening. To the unversed, Rajini had announced his official entry into politics in 2021 and his Rajini Makkal Mandram is expected to contest in the Tamil Nadu legislative assembly elections in May that year.

Due to this Thalaivar 169 was touted to be the actor's last movie and buzz was that Kamal Haasan will be producing this venture with Lokesh Kanagaraj directing it. However with pandemic Coronavirus disrupting plans and productions, it seems like that ambitious reunion of Kamal Haasan and Rajinikanth might not happen at all, though nothing is official as yet.

It is worth mentioning here that before the COVID-19 outbreak, it was said that RKFI, Kamal Haasan's production house will be making an official announcement on Thalaivar 169.
