Tamil film producer Kalaipuli S Thanu speaks on OTT!

Tamil film producer Kalaipuli S Thanu of V Creations has come in support of releasing Tamil movies on OTT platforms and has requested those opposing it to not view it as a threat to movie theaters or audience. In a video statement, Thanu supported the move of Ponmagal Vandhal starring Jyotika releasing on Amazon Prime Video directly and said,

"Our industry is facing a big problem right now because of Ponmagal Vandhal getting sold to Amazon Prime Video. It may seem wrong to some people but to us producers this is the right move because if Ponmagal Vandhal had released as scheduled, the movie would have premiered on OTT platform in May. But because of the Coronavirus, theaters were closed and the movie couldn't release.

The producer would already be facing losses from no theatrical run so if he refuses to give his movie to the OTT platform as previously agreed, he would loose that money too.."

The producer added that allowing this move will in no way affect the movie theater business and he supported his claim by stating, "When TV first came into the picture, we said it was the end of cinema. When video deck (VCR) came into the picture, we said the same thing. Cinema has not vanished even after VCD, DVD and what not..Even when 300 Crore budget movies made it illegally online, cinema did not vanish. This OTT and Amazon Prime Video are similar entities."

Thanu also asked to empathize with the situation of the producers at the moment who have multiple projects in finishing stage but without a viable future at sight. He said,

"The reason I'm asking you to support OTT is because any platform would only buy 10-15 movies a year. This is only going to help the producers who are already struggling in this situation..Not all producers are going to line-up all their films to OTT before theatrical release..This is only for rare cases."

Further supporting Ponmagal Vandhal and its production house 2D Entertainment, Thanu concluded, "The money Rajasekar Pandian will get from OTT is a meager amount compared to what he would have invested..He is going to invest that money into other mid-sized movies. Also this company is known for helping out the education of the underprivileged. So any money that goes to them is indirectly helping out the poor.."
