As Darbar gears up for a big release tomorrow [January 9, 2020], the team appears self-assured and confident about the Rajinikanth starrer. Darbar year 2020's first major release for Tamil cinema and naturally, all eyes are on it. Here is the Preview - SWOT analysis of the film, which is A.R. Murugadoss's first outing with Rajini.
Strengths
- Cast - It doesn't get any bigger than Rajinikanth in terms of a 'star-cast' but Darbar is also backed by well-known performers such as Suneil Shetty, Nayanthara and Yogi Babu among others.
- A-Team - Director A.R. Murugadoss, cinematographer Santhosh Sivan, music composer Anirudh are all top names in their respective fields and it goes without saying an 'A game' is expected out of them for someone like Rajinikanth.
- Commercial Canvas - The success of Rajinikanth's last outing Petta proved that his audience craved seeing him in mass-action roles. The actor is indeed playing one in Darbar and it should be interesting to watch how he is received in the 'cop' role he shied away from all these years.
Weaknesses
- Except for songs like Chumma Kizhi and Kannula Thimiru (which is not a part of the official tracklist), it seems a missed opportunity that the songs did not add the required zing towards the pre-release hype.
Opportunity
- Rajinikanth is box-office gold in Tamil cinema and Lyca productions which had a so-so 2019 collection-wise, has the potential to recoup its box office expectations. This will be aided by the long Pongal weekend which is following post Darbar's release and no potential competition.
Threats
- Rajinikanth shied away from playing a cop for almost 25 years because he was superstitious that the role never brought him luck. If Darbar doesn't work, expect him to never see him in khaki again.
