Tamil Cinema to witness more than 5 Sports Drama in 2019; A new trend ahead !?

The genre 'sports drama' is not new one to Tamil Cinema (Kanna, Irudhi Suttru, Jeeva, Vennila Kabadi Kuzhu), but the frequency of such movies from the industry is very less. Even films with sports as its main base and added humour [Chennai 60028 series, Maan Karate, Ethir Neechal, etc] have fetched good responses in the past which is an indication of the audience's reception towards this genre.

Usually when a genre clicks well with the audience, a downpour of similar films is witnessed; case-in-point the endless horror-comedies the Tamil audience have been subject to in the last 5 years. However, despite the success rate of films with sports in them, they haven't really been explored to its full potential in Kollywood though 2019 looks like the year it may be given a kick-start to.

With more than 5 movies slated for a release under the 'sports-drama' genre and Hip Hop Tamizha's Natpe Thunai ready to start the ride in a few days, we decided to take a look into the films and what they are set to offer:

  • Natpe Thunai (Hockey) - Releasing this April 4 2019, Natpe Thunai is bringing a sport which has never been touched in Tamil cinema before. The U certified movie has both Hiphop Tamizha Aadhi and Anagha playing hockey players and has now joined the list of Indian hockey films such as Gold (2018), Soorma (2018) and Chak De India (2007).

  • Thalapathy 63 (Football) - Director Atlee raised a lot of eyebrows when he announced that he will be making a film based on sports with a commercial star like Vijay. High expectations aside, this will also be the first time an actor of Vijay's stature features in a full-fledged sports film. The movie is touted to be revenge football drama and slated for a release during Diwali 2019.

  • Kennedy Club (Women's Kabbadi) - Director Suseenthiran who showcased male Kabaddi in Vennila Kabaddi Kuzhu is returning with women's Kabaddi in Kennedy Club. Shot all over India, the movie was last in the news for a grand climax where 500 players from various parts of the country will be seen featuring. The movie is expected to release by the end of 2019.

  • Jada (Football) - Kathir, Roshni starrer Jada is another football based film expected this year with Kathir as the football player in the film. The team recently began dubbing for the film and further announcements are expected very soon.

  • Boxer (Boxing) - After M. Kumaran S/o Mahalaxmi and Maan Karate, where boxing was partially touched, Tamil cinema will see Arun Vijay play an MMA Boxer in a film of the same name. Arun Vijay has been seen working on his physique intensely for this film and he will be representing India on an International platform in the movie.

  • Champion (Football) -Another sports based film from director Suseenthiran, Champion stars actor Vishwa K in the lead as a football player. The movie is expected to release sometime in 2019.

  • Vennila Kabaddi Kuzhu 2 (Men's Kabaddi) - One of Susseenthiran penned films this year, Vennila Kabaddi Kuzhu 2 stars Vikranth in the lead and is expected to be a spiritual sequel to the director's earlier film, only with a different cast and crew.
