Movies This Week: WHO, Goosebumps 2, Halloween save face!

This week, film releases in almost all languages put up an overall mediocre show, except for two movies that acted as the saving grace. A detailed look at the releases this time around:

  • Jarugandi (Tamil): A youngster in a middle class life burdened with responsibilities starts forging documents to make more money This is followed by blackmailing by a cop, kidnapping of a girl, wrath of a human-trafficking group and what not. But the film as such has not done much to keep the audience hooked and has proved to be a lengthy watch.

  • Genius (Tamil): The tale of a man who has a breakdown due to the stressed lifestyle he has been living since school, Genius fails to work even with Suseenthiran at the helm. (Review Here).

  • WHO (Malayalam): A psychological thriller cum a science fiction with elements of time travelling - WHO is from a completely new team and has managed to grab enough attention for a one time watch. WHO is on the lines of Inception, Triangle and hence passes of as an acquired watch.

  • Goosebumps 2: Haunted Halloween (English): It's Halloween season in the west and Goosebumps 2 is one of the two Halloween themed films to release this weekend. This kids movie is not too shoddy and can prove quite entertaining if you are into this genre.

  • Hunter Killer (English): A Russian president is held hostage by his own defense minister who threatens to unleash World War 3 and it is upto an American submarine expert (Gerard Butler) to stop it from happening. The movie has been unanimously agreed upon as an extremely slow film that fails to keep you hooked to the plot.

  • Halloween (English): The other holiday themed movie this weekend, Halloween is starkly opposite of its counterpart and is an out and out horror thriller. The movie is a 40 year old sequel to Halloween (1978) and sees the return of the psycho masked killer only to be avenged by the sole survivor of his killing spree 40 years ago.

  • 5 Weddings (English / Hindi): Nargis Fakhri plays an Indo-American journalist whose dislike for India is put to test when she is required by job to cover 5 weddings at India. Rajkummar Rao plays an Indian police officer assigned to keep an eye on her and stops her from writing anything negative about the country. Even with a story-line that could have offered something onscreen, 5 Weddings falls short of details and is very loosely executed.

  • Baazaar (Hindi): An almost Indian version of the Hollywood film Wolf of Wall Street, Baazaar has Saif Ali Khan and silver screen debutant Rohan Mehra playing the almost versions of Jonah Hill and Leonardo DiCaprio. However the stock-market based film hasn't proved gripping enough and even comes bearing some market related inaccuracies in it.

Others

Two other films are also available for viewing in theatres of Tamil Nadu which are Kaashi in search of Ganga(Hindi) which an old time style tale of a crematory operator who sets out on an adventure when his sister goes missing and Veera Bhoga Vasantha Rayulu (Telugu) which is a crime thriller starring Nara Rohit, Shriya Saran, Sudheer Babu among others.
