Movies This Week: Gali Guleiyan, Ranam shine on top!

This week, theatre screens in Chennai have been occupied by one of the highest number of releases in recent times, yet not one movie has stood out tall. Among a plethora of lesser known films were the moderately known ones, that also did not shine big on the content. Here is a detailed look:

  • Vanjagar Ulagam (Tamil): A crime drama and thriller, Vanjagar Ulagam seems to come with too many knots and messages for the viewers to take in. The movie however stands with an aggregate of 55% in our ratings which isn't too shabby and can be classified as a one-time watch. The cast also includes Guru Somasundaram,  Hareesh Peradi, John Vijay, Anisha Ambrose and Chandini Tamilarasan among others. (Review Here)

  • The Nun (English): One of the biggest duds from the Conjuring world, The Nun left horror film enthusiasts disappointed when it hit theatre screens this Friday. The build up for the back-story to 'Abbey', the demonic nun wasn't backed up enough with the required horror is what's the common word.

  • Silly Fellows (Telugu)A comic caper involving an  amnesiac politician, 500 crores Indian money and two youngsters with love-life issues is what Silly Fellows spins with. The movie though cannot be categorized as a worthy watch and has a rating aggregate of 45%.

  • Paltan (Hindi): A patriotic war film in an action genre with an ensemble cast- Paltan is your tyical J.P. Dutta film only in 2018. Though based on a true-story of the 1967 Nathu La and Cho La clashes between the Indian and Chinese military, Paltan does not evoke enough patriotism to watch the film.

  • Gali Guleiyan (Hindi): The film which has garnered the most critical acclaim this week, Gali Guleiyan is the tale of a reclusive and paranoid man whose idea of reality are the hidden cameras through which he obsessively watches people. Manoj Bajpayee has been unanimously praised for his performance in the movie which is a must-watch if you are into dark movies.

  • Theevandi (Malayalam)What happens when a historic chain smoker starts thinking about other things is what forms the background of Tovino Thomas starrer Theevandi. The movie has opened to mixed reviews and has garnered a 53% in our movie ratings. (Review Here)

  • Ranam (Malayalam): An accidental drug dealer wants to quit his profession and is posed with challenges while doing so. Prithviraj starrer Ranam takes place in Detroit, USA with this story and managed very well with it too. The movie with all its ingredients of a gangster drama and good performances is worthy of your time this weekend.
