Too complex for its own good!

Non-linear narration is one thing but this film keeps changing tracks at such a frequency, that you blink an eye and you might have missed the transition. Well, things do get tied together in the end but you wonder whether it had to be so complex. It is the murder mystery angle that holds some interest. The gangster portions rely too much on style (I am not sure even that works out as expected) but pretty much nothing is actually happening. The comedy almost always falls flat. (more)

A whodunit, a gangster drama, and a neo-noir all rolled into one, this hard-to-classify quality of Vanjagar Ulagam is both its strength and weakness.

But what keeps us involved is the circuitous manner in which the director tells this tale. Even if the climactic revelations are easy to guess, the constant shuffle between scenes in the present and from the past lends the film some novelty.(more)

Experiment gone wrong

Manoj Beedha's Vanjagar Ulagam is clearly an experiment in terms of making. The cinematography has extensive Western influences (think dark, moody lighting) and the music is offbeat (a Carnatic dubstep plays in the background when a police encounter is taking place) but lengthy dialogue-driven sequences kill the film. The press reporter keeps talking. The cops too keep conversing. Even the gangsters seem to prefer chit-chat over guns. And we're left staring at the big screen, in silence, for what seems to be a 160-minute eternity.(more)

All style, no substance

echnically, foreign cinematographer Rodrigo Del Rio Herrara and Saravanan Ramasamy provide stylish frames and visuals which are aptly supported by Sam CSs amazing score. Editing by Anthony is also crisp but the film itself moves at a snail pace. (more)

Try Vanjagar Ulagam for its experimental packaging.

his is an out and out 'A' film. There are swear words being thrown around ruthlessly, and the scenes require them. There are gunshots, there is blood, there is violence, there are goose-flesh moments, and there are scenes that make you think about how the society has been treating a section of people. Above all these things, Vanjagar Ulagam cannot get a more perfect date for release. Watch the film to know why!(more)

A novel attempt but laborious watch

Go for it if you fancy "experimental for the sake of it" stuff and also if you are a fan of Chandini Tamilarasan.(more)
