The rise and rise of politics in today's Tamil Cinema

Up until 2016, controversy in Tamil cinema primarily meant confrontation with people in politics and the fracas was either created inadvertently (Kamal Haasan's Vishwaroopam was issued a 15-day ban in Tamil Nadu, to avoid protests from Muslim groups) or intentionally (Vijay's Thalaiva faced a lot of undue pressure from the then ruling government, owing to the political content in the film). The political climate in the state, has taken an U-turn since then and film-makers too seem to have shed their hesitance to rub shoulders with politics, both in content and otherwise (Mersal and its tussle with the BJP is the best example of both).

The tone of combining politics with entertainment seems to be only increasing as the days go by and the active entry of Tamil cine industry's two biggest stars Rajinikanth and Kamal Haasan into politics is the biggest proof of that. Added to this, films with a political content seem to have precedence with the current film-makers, as around 10 films (listed below) with politics as background are awaiting a release this year.
