In a brand new interview to an online media portal, Kaala director Pa. Ranjith has clarified that his upcoming film is in no way connected to Rajinikanth's political ambitions and is merely about the land-grabbing issues as portrayed in the teaser and trailer. Ranjith has been quoted by the media portal as saying,
"Let me make it absolutely clear that Kaala was not conceived keeping in mind Rajinikanth’s decision to enter politics. Our political ideologies are completely different from each other...Kaala is a piece of fiction...and my objective through this film is to talk about the politics of land...The idea was to create a representational story that reflects life in the slums and a character that represents their problems."
Ranjith also spoke about the meanings being deducted for various elements in his film such as the name Karikaalan representing the late LTTE leader Prabhakaran and said that audiences tend to read too much into his film.
"..I have a special affinity towards the name Karikaalan. I just wanted to use it. Whether I intended it or not, Karikaalan will appear familiar to many. The problem is that whatever I think of, it is interpreted as a symbol. There are times when I feel people are reading and applying meaning into things I didn’t actually think of. I guess audiences are continuing what started with Madras (Ranjith's first film)...Audiences have also started to interpret things according to their ideology. I cannot have the final word on how a sign or an object must be read..."
Finally, Ranjith who is seen as the flag-bearer of the Dalit-heritage in films answered the million dollar question and said that Kaala would be no different and said,"Kaala, Kabali, Madras, Attakathi, they are all the same in a way."
