The trailer of Rajinikanth starer Kaala was dropped last night and surprisingly it had references such as Dhandakaranya Nagar and Raavana from the Hindu mythology Ramayana. And when we added two and two (from what was known from the teaser), we had a reason to believe Pa. Ranjith might have recreated a modern day Ramanyana inspired story.
According to the Hindu mythology, Dhandakaranya was ruled by a King named Danda who had Sukracharya for his guru. Unknowingly, Danda falls for Sukracharya's daughter Araja which angers Sukracharya and hence he leaves Danda cursing that his kingdom would face fire and death in 7 days.
Going from the teaser and trailer of Kaala, Dhandakaranya Nagar seems to he under the leadership of Karikaalan (Rajini) who roots for actor Das in elections. Zareena (Huma Qureshi) seems to be related to Das as she is seen rejoicing during Das's win and later even representing the party. It is also established that there was a romantic angle to Karikaalan and Zareena that did not go as expected (Karikaalan is married to someone else now) and we see Dhandakaranya Nagar engulfed in fire and witness Samuthirakani's death along with a huge explosion too.
History also translates Dandaka into king’s sceptre which is a symbol of power and righteousness, and that post the curse, Dhandakarnya became a dense forest where even sunlight could not enter. This means that the folks of Dhandakarnya Nagar are low key represented as symbols of righteousness and explains their use of only black to even celebrate a festival of colours.
Mythology also states that Dhanda was a demon and in the trailer video, we see Nana Patekar describing Rajini as Raavan (or the demon). Its another story altogether that Dhandakarnya was also the place where Raavan abducted Sita, so its difficult to say what Pa. Ranjith had in mind when he described Rajini in his movie as 'Othathala Ravana' (meaning one-headed Raavan).
