Vathikuchi Movie review

‘Vathikuchi’ managed to create some buzz, thanks to the interesting trailer and song teasers. Directed by newcomer Kinslin, the movie is jointly produced by A. R. Murugadoss and Fox Star Productions. A. R. Murugadoss’ brother Deliban is making his debut in this film as the protagonist and Anjali plays his love interest in the film. Music is by Ghibran of ‘Vaagai Sooda Vaa’ fame.

The Plot

Sakthi (Deliban) is a share auto driver and three different persons – an insurance agent Vanaraj (Jagan), a local goon Binny (Sampath) and jewellery shop owner (Jayaprakash) want him dead. Sakthi falls for Leena (Anjali) and tries to impress her all the time. As the story moves forward, the motives behind the three persons to kill Sakthi are revealed. Will Sakthi stay alive and win his love? Watch the movie to know the answer.

Performances

Deliban makes a confident debut by knowing his limitations and he comes good in action sequences. On the contrary, he has to improve vastly on the nuances of acting. For some strange reason, Anjali’s dialogue delivery appears to be artificial. Jagan is impressive in his negative role while Sampath makes a mark in the climax. The director has appropriately used the rest of the supporting cast to take the movie forward.

Technicalities

Under Ghibran’s music, ‘Kuru Kuru’ and ‘Amma Wake me up’ songs are hummable. His background score is at times overpowering the visuals. Gurudev’s camera work is swift and gives the right tone to the visuals. The visuals do not deviate and strictly focus on the premise of the story. Editing by Praveen – Srikanth is laudable as there are some interesting cuts when the point of narration changes. The movie does tend to slow down a bit in the second half, which could have been avoided.

Script and Direction - Kinslin

Highs

  • Director Kinslin has managed to deliver a decent thriller and he has tried to maintain the suspense throughout. He has also made sure most of the scenes are linked to the main plot.
  • The sequence where Sakthi prevents a murder in the first half has been brilliantly scripted and executed. That is the major highlight of the film.

Lows

  • The first half has some comedy sequences in the spoken English class and they fall flat. Also, the love sequences do not engage audience much and appear detached from the main plot.
  • Heroism and violence take precedence in the second half. Logic goes for a toss at many places.  For instance, the protagonist flees from the goons to take rest and have his meal, and comes back later to battle it out with them.

Bottomline

‘Vathikuchi’ is a fairly engaging thriller that has its share of hits and misses. A little more care in the screenplay of the second half would have made the film tauter.
