Vathikuchi

Vathikuchi is a fairly engaging thriller that has its share of hits and misses.

Gurudev's camera work is swift and gives the right tone to the visuals. The visuals do not deviate anywhere else and strictly focus on the premise of the story. Editing by Praveen- Srikanth is laudable as there are some interesting cuts when the point of narration changes. The movie does tend to slow down a bit in the second half, which could have been avoided.(more)

Masala soaked machismo !

Stunts are the film's mainstay and Rajasekhar has done a commendable job with the sequences. The action sequences are deftly captured by cinematographer R.B. Gurudhev who uses the ultra-slomo to good effect in the fights. Editors Praveen-Srikanth do their bit to ensure that the tempo and the intensity of the film is well maintained, even as it has to make room for the love track. The songs on screen may not exactly have the same color that the music emits but it stays well within the story and setting and Ghibran's background score is effective at best.(more)

After managing to convincingly set-up the plot, the debutant loses his way in resolving it.

Vathikuchi is very much a straightforward commercial action film in the mould of earlier films like Dhil and Dhool, which were also about righteous young men fighting for survival. What lets it down is the writing, which lacks the sophistication for such thrillers to work with clockwork precision. Take for example the manner in which each of the four back stories unfolds. Rather than doing it a manner that feels organic, Kinslin makes a character act as a stand-in for the audience to allow him to stage these revelations. (more)

With occasional speed breakers, Vathikuchi is entertaining.

Cinematography by Gurudev is not extraordinary, but good in few action sequences. It is best experienced when seen on screen, than explained. Ghibran's music, especially the background score, elevates the movie a notch. However, little would anybody have noticed that the background score in the climax atop a mountain, is reminiscent to music from Pirates of the Caribbean.(more)

Run of the mill

The highlight of the film is definitely Ghibrans peppy music, especially the song Kuru Kuru which is the pick of the lot. On the whole the film just does not live up to the pre-release hype surrounding it. (more)

A below average action movie

M. Ghibran once again raises the promise of being a music director to look forward to but still seems to not completely fulfil expectations. Maybe the right subject would deliver him the stardom he rightfully deserves. (more)
