Some of them have had releases that did not create the required stir while some of them have totally been off the cinematic radar; these directors of Tamil cinema's big league show high promises with their upcoming movie releases in 2018. Are they all set to make the most-shunned phrase i.e. 'comeback' ? Let's find out:
Bala
After a two year hiatus, director Bala got his much needed positive opening to this year's earlier release Naachiyaar. The movie also proved to be a slight shift from the director's stereotype which many saw as a refreshing welcome. Bala's other directorial might be a remake film but it sure has created a lot of hype; thanks to the super-hit status of the original (Arjun Reddy) and the anticipation surrounding Dhruv Vikram's (son of actor Vikram, some of whose best films are by Bala) debut.
Mani Ratnam
Mani Ratnam's film last year, Kaatru Veliyidai garnered only mixed reviews as opposed to the unanimous positive response people gave for O Kadhal Kanmani in 2015. Given that the director has gathered a star battalion for his upcoming Chekka Chivantha Vaanam, fans are expecting the director to pull of another Aayudha Ezhuthuwhich was rich both as a film and in star value.
Gautham Menon
Gautham Menon's releases for the year, Dhruva Natchathiram (with Vikram) and Enai Noki Payyum Thotta (with Dhanush) are more than expected to make up for not only his declining popularity (with the director getting embroiled in controversies and what not) but also the lack of a blockbuster since Vinnnai Thaandi Varuvaaya.
Hari
A director who ruled the roost in early 2000s with original movies is only seen directing follow-ups to hit franchises of late. His upcoming film Saamy Square may be no different but the film is expected to leave a much bigger impact, given that it comes from Hari's most successful film till date from over a decade ago.

AR Murugadoss
For the past couple of years, A.R. Murugadoss has only delivered forgettable movies as a director with Akira (Hindi) and Spyder (Tamil-Telugu). Naturally, he chose to make a comeback with Thalapathy 62(working title) starring Vijay, with whom Murugadoss delivered his last blockbuster hit Kaththi. Thalapathy 62 will hit theatre screens for Diwali this year.
Selvaraghavan
Its been 5 years since Selvaraghvan's box-office debacle Irandaam Ulagam and his upcoming films Nenjam Marapathillai, which is a delayed project and the Suriya starrer NGK look hopeful of reviving the director's track-record.

Rajiv Menon
Incidentally, 2018 is also the year where director Rajiv Menon who holds his place among the cult league despite his once-in-a-blue-moon films is making a 'comeback' with Sarvam Thaala Mayam. The film features G.V. Prakash and has the director's usual A.R. Rahman for the music. Whether the movie will live up to the reputation of Minasara Kanavu or Kandukonden Kandukonden is something only time can tell.
Lingusamy
Another director who ruled the 2000s with his blockbuster films, Lingusamy has been missing from the direction scene for quite sometime now. His last film was Anjaan with Suriya which did not create the 'Lingusamy impact' that one usually expects. Sandakozhi 2, which is a film-in-progress could potentially make up for the lost charm.
Venkat Prabhu
The director who gave refreshing entertainers like Chennai: 28, Saroja and Goa might have hit a repetitive mode in the last few films of his. This year's Party sure is expected to be the game-changer for Venkat Prabhu.
Radha Mohan
Director Radha Mohan who was once known for giving feel-good movies (including gems like Mozhi and Abhiyum Naanum) is returning this year with a remake film starring Jyothika. Kaatrin Mozhi will mark his much anticipated return, as last few outings of the director were blinked-and-missed by the audience.
