Kamal Haasan’s magnum opus ‘Vishwaroopam’ will finally see the light of day this Friday (January 25) in the theatres.  The movie is touted to be an action spy thriller and it will also be premiered across DTH networks on February 2. Kamal Haasan has written, directed and produced the movie, apart from donning the lead role. Andrea and Pooja Kumar play leading ladies in the film. Music is scored by Shankar Ehsaan Loy.

Strengths

  • The movie is expected to take good opening across the globe as the distributors are ensuring that the movie gets the best screens possible.

  • A lot is expected out of Kamal Haasan in this film as it is his ambitious project and it has been in the making for a long time. Hollywood director Barrie Osborne has reportedly watched the film and he has appreciated Kamal for making a brilliant film.

  • The movie has employed the latest Auro 3D sound technology. Those who have watched the trailer in Auro 3D are already raving about the sound effect. This is only the second movie in World history to use this state of the art sound system.

  • The songs of the film are situational and they are expected to work better with the visuals. Going by the trailer, visuals look racy and pacy.

Opportunities

  • Kamal Haasan is taking a bold step by screening the film across DTH networks right after one week of its theatrical release (pricing not decided). If the movie manages to garner good profit, many films are expected to follow suit. This might help to curb piracy and also to set new benchmarks in revenue collections.

  • Kamal Haasan has bigger aspiration of getting into Hollywood industry. Vishwaroopam's success might just open doors to cross boundaries.

Threats

  • Mani Ratnam’s Kadal and Vikram’s David are releasing on February 1. If Vishwaroopam does not manage to get unanimous positive response, it will lose its screens to new releases making it short-lived, if the word-of-mouth is not positive.

  • Vishwaroopam has become synonymous with Controversies. Latest is that gulf countries are not allowing Vishwaropam to be screened in their countries affecting viewership and collection. Islamic groups in Tamil Nadu are also seeking a ban.

  • The buzz levels have significantly dropped (30% drop as per moviecrow's social buzz index) compared to the previous time the movie was announced to be released on January 10th.

Final Words

The entire film fraternity is looking for 'Vishwaroopam' as its success would mean a giant leap for Tamil film industry. However, this is proving to be Kamal's biggest gamble in his career. Let us wish him good luck.
