Neerparavai Director fasts as tax waiver denied

Neerparavai Director fasts as govt denies tax waiver

Red Giant's Neerparavai directed by Seenu Ramasamy is slated to release in the upcoming days. Though Neerparavai received a clean "U" certificate and appreciated for mature handling of sensitive issues, the movie has not been able to receive tax exemption from the government. The director Seenu Ramasamy in a drastic movie has decided to go on a fast to bring to state government's notice for denying 30% entertainment tax exemption.

Approval Committee afraid to give tax waiver?

Red Giant's super hit movie Oru Kal Oru Kannadi was also denied tax exemption. One of the members in the review committee revealed that the current government has maintained distance with cinema industry and allowed the industry to work independently without much political intervention. It is not the government that is denying waiver. But, the committee (comprising of P. Vasu, RV Udhayakumar, LR Eswari and many others that approves tax waiver after special screening) was afraid of providing tax waiver fearing backlash from the government.

Update Nov 8,2012 - Red Giant Production house confirmed that the entertainment tax exemption for Neerparavai was granted through High court today (after the fasting announcement by the director). However, OKOK entertainment tax exemption case is still pending in court.
