MovieCrow Box Office Report - January 14 to 17

There were choices aplenty for movie buffs and the family audience during the long Pongal weekend. Rajini Murugan, Tharai Thappattai, Gethu and Kathakali had hit the screens last weekend, offering something for everyone's preferences. Check out the box office ranking of Tamil movies in Chennai during last weekend.

1. Rajini Murugan

Sivakarthikeyan proves yet again that he is a huge phenomenon in deciding the fate of the film. Even though Rajini Murugan received mixed reviews, the movie took the best opening among Pongal releases, as most of the shows were sold out via advance bookings. With the family audiences thoroughly enjoying the movie, it looks like Sivakarthikeyan has come up with yet another super hit.

2. Tharai Thappattai

Bala has disappointed his fans and the critics alike with his latest offering. Tharai Thappattai has failed to create a deep impact due to its wavering screenplay. However, the movie took a good opening, as it grabbed larger screens in multiplexes and Bala's loyal fans thronged the theatres.

3. Gethu

Udhayanidhi Stalin's Gethu surprisingly received a warm reception among movie-goers, in spite of negative reviews. However, it has to be seen how the movie sustains at the box office this week.

4. Kathakali

Vishal has struck gold yet again with an action entertainer. Kathakali has been getting rave reviews among the critics, make it a winner with respect to content. Pandiraj's unpredictable screenplay played a huge factor in drawing audience to the theatres and one can expect the show count to increase this week.

Other Movies

Despite the Pongal storm, Pasanga 2 was hanging on to a few shows in the city, while Bhooloham and Malai Nerathu Mayakkam had a show each during the weekend.
