Vaalu Review – Lightweight Entertainer!!!

Bharath Vijayakumar

A saleable hero not having a release for 3 years is something out of the norm. In this day and age when social media spices up even mundane things there certainly has been a surge in the interest of Vaalu among film buffs due to this delay.

Plot:

A happy go lucky young man sets his eyes (read as heart) on a girl. You then pretty much know what would happen.

Cast:

Vaalu rides on STR’s shoulders or rather Vaalu is an exercise to showcase the star prowess of it’s leading man. To give his due credit STR shines as ‘Sharp’ as he is called in the movie. It is easy to get put off when the hero goes on a self-praising mode and conquers all barriers at ease. But Vaalu makes it enjoyable for the most part as most of it is done in nonchalantly and almost as part spoof. Santhanam shares a great vibe with STR as usual and the comedy either works or is harmless and never irritates you. But the verbal abuse based on physical traits continues.

Direction:

Debutant Vijay Chander certainly has flair in catering to the masses. He knows times have changed. So while we have the mandatory slo mo walk of the hero to a rap heaping his praises in the background , there is nothing larger than life and it is all done cheekily. The scenes involving the hero’s family definitely stand out. There is the mandatory sentiment here too. But it puts a smile on your face rather than leave you with a heavy heart. Aadukalam Narein and Sri Ranjani who play the hero’s parents have played their parts to perfection.  Commercial cinema also stales quite quickly. Despite the delays Vaalu does not look outdated if you can excuse the plot!!! But the scene involving Hansika’s father and an iPhone is a big joke. That it was meant to be serious makes it all the more funny. The 10 day countdown for the hero to impress the heroine never really takes off. After a point the day count popping up on screen becomes extremely redundant.  The film could have definitely been a little shorter but the climax works and that saves the day.

Bottomline:

Vaalu is a lightweight entertainer and it is the lightness that you actually end up enjoying even if you do not appreciate the entertainment that it tries to provide.
