Billa 2 Music Review

Billa 2 is Yuvan's fifth movie with Ajith and expectations were running high because Yuvan has always given some big hits for Ajith over a number of years. Did Billa2's music live up to the hype?

Yuvan must have totally internalized Billa in his blood streams by now. The way he can get so many variations out of the central Billa theme is quite impressive. The way he has used the background score and theme in the teaser trailer shows Yuvan's firm grasp of this character. Na. Muthukumar has written the lyrics for all the songs. The unique aspect about Billa 2 song making is that the lyrics were penned before the tunes were composed. What it means is that lyricist doesn't need not be boxed by the pre-defined structure of the tune and meter lengths.

 Gangster

Gangster is the monster track of the album with Billa theme interspersed in the foot tapping catchy club mix. It is difficult to ignore the reuse of familiar DJ loops that you may have heard before and doesn't hinder you from enjoying this track. This song is expected to get only better with Ajith's screen presence and picturization. Stefny's singing towards the end provides a fine balance to this monster song. Only downside is Yuvan's voice is neutral gear through out and doesn't pack a punch.

 Idhayam

The song has soothing melody and unhurried rendition by Shweta Pandit. Since this song is all about the woman's heart caught in love, Yuvan's intelligent use of Tabla fits well with this song and more or less runs like the heart beat throughout the song. On the big screen, the songs of this nature pose a risk of people stepping out of theatres for cigarette break.

 Yedho Mayakkam

The start of this song is very promising with nadaswaram, whistle and some fresh music with some gasping by the female lead. After that initial set up, one would expect great things to follow. This is where the song trips and never recovers. The song progressively gets very repetitive and flat. Again, you will again hear all the familiar loops heard in Yuvan's past numbers.

 Madurai Ponnu

The song "Madurai Ponnu" is one of the better tracks in the album. The setting of the song and the incidents following the song can all be pieced together by sincere fans who have seen the leaked photos already. Yuvan has seamlessly integrated a medley of instruments to dish out this mildly raunchy song. Andrea has displayed her signature diva style vocal range effortlessly in this song.

 Unakkulle Mirugam

It appears this song is conceived as a pulse ripping head banging song showing the transformation of a common man to dreaded Billa. The song has lilting variation of Billa tunes sprinkled in the hard metal rock number. Probably, the song will be shown in montage settings where bad guys are going to be made mince-meat. Hope this song works better with picturization.

  Billa 2 Theme

Billa 2 Theme is fantastic and expected to be the backbone of the movie. The theme has already worked its magic in the teaser trailer and has tremendous potential to go up a few notches higher with picturization.

Bottom Line

Despite the efforts by Yuvan, the song doesn't help build the aura around this international criminal. Billa 2 music is somewhat predictably loopy, flat, lacking soul and lyrical depth resulting in strictly above average outing for Yuvan and Ajith combo. What is badly lacking in this album is that at least one kick-ass addictive number one would typically expect to see in such big ventures.
