Romeo Juliet - Love Isn't always Lovely

Bharath Vijayakumar

Romance is the most exploited territory by Tamil filmmakers. You would think that they have exploited every possibility to project love in a different light on screen. When a film titled Romeo Juliet enters the fray you then realize that the genre would continue to be milked irrespective of how dry it has or would become.

Plot:

Aishwarya(Hansika) is on the lookout for her better half with a truck load of monetary anticipations. A case of mistaken identity makes her fall for Karthik (Jayam Ravi). She backtracks once she realizes that he does not fit in her scheme of things. Will Karthik let go off her easily?

Cast:

The lead pair and their flair gain more importance in a romantic film. It has been more than a year since Jayam Ravi had a release. He looks amazingly fit in the role of a gym instructor and does a pretty decent job. This is probably the film with the most number of dialogues for Hansika. Her character arc is what defines this film. That she has tried her best is what could be the best compliment. If you are someone who is satisfied with the leading lady looking extremely pretty then the film could be high on your radar. But if acting chops does matter to you, be forewarned. In her emotional scenes you are not sure whether to feel pity on the character that she is portraying or on Hansika herself for the acting.

Poonam Bajwa does not get a song. Instead she gets a scene with shorts that are so short that they remain hidden.

'Dandanakka' song is one of the very few highlights of the film. The choreography is kept simple and comes off like a tribute to TR than a mockery.

Direction:

The basic premise of debutant Lakshman has some meatiness. The unapologetic and selfish nature of the heroine does sound promising on paper. But the circumstances and the way the characters behave haphazardly would leave you cold. There is not a semblance of believability in the way the events unfold. The jokes aren't really funny barring a few. The love or the lack of it depicted by Hansika's character is highly self centered. While that is perfectly fine and in tune with her character throughout the film, she actually behaves no differently in the climax when we are supposed to believe otherwise. It is just that she realizes there are other things more important than money. But even here she is only bothered about how these other things impact her and not for a second she has thoughts about her Romeo. The film might have worked better had it focused more on the 'Taming of the Shrew' scenario. But alas with a title like 'Romeo Juliet' you know that is not going to happen.

Bottomline:

Insipid romance that goes on and on. The good looking lead pair and a few scenes that play well to the gallery are the saving graces.

Rating: 2/5
