3 - Well Begun
By Bharath Vijayakumar

The central character in "3" suffers from bipolar disorder. The movie itself seems to be under the influence of the same as we have two halves that are poles apart from each other. The first half is a breezy romance dealt in a realistic way, interlaced with humour. It is the second half that tests your patience a little.

Cast

Dhanush shines again. He seems to fit into the shoes of a schoolboy and a mature young man with absolute ease. His performance in the climax stands out. But his character in the second half seems like a mere extension of his portrayal in Mayakkam Enna .Even some of the scenes are so similar. And it has hardly been months since Mayakkam Enna released. Naturally the impact of his performance gets diluted. Shruthi  Haasan looks like a million bucks and also emotes fairly well. But the way her character weeps almost every other scene in the second half annoys you no end. Sivakarthikeyan makes optimum use of his limited screen time. The tuition place sequences certainly have you in splits. Badava Gopi too deserves equal credit in these scenes. Sundar who is crucial to the second half plays his part well. Prabhu is a picture of dignity. Rohini scores with the ease of a veteran while Bhanupriya doesn't have much to do.

Crew

Anirudh's music is much more than Kolaveri and he also makes his presence felt with his BGM. This is a promising debut and expectations from this young composer will be high for his next outing. Kolaveri has been done and dusted so much for the past few months that when it actually appears on screen it looks ordinary. Editing by Kola Bhaskar is neat and there is no confusion in the proceedings even though the film moves back and forth in time.

Aishwarya shows promise as a filmmaker in many scenes. Her casting is apt. The intention to be different from the regular is evident throughout. The freshness in the school scenes appeal. But the film loses its grip on you in the second half. There are a few questions unanswered. That neither Shruthi's parents nor her in-laws are by her side at the time of her deepest sorrow is baffling.

Bottomline

Well begun is half done . “3” certainly begins well. A tighter and thrilling second half might have worked wonders.  Glitches aside "3" is a worthy debut for Aishwarya. It will not please everyone but might go down well with a section of the audience.
