3 is the tale of love, commitment and sorrow of a young married couple.

First Half: The first half of the film is breezy and engaging. Sivakarthikeyan impresses with his witty and comical one-liners. The conversation between Dhanush (Ram) and Prabhu (his father) is unconventional and refreshingly different. The first half generally moves at a rapid pace making it a watchable one.The blossoming of love between Dhanush (Ram) and Shruti (Janani) is showcased in a natural realistic manner. Shruti looks great in a deglamourized role. The bike ride scene is a treat to watch. The cinematography by Velraj is excellent. An example of that is the “terrace scene” where the natural night light is neatly picturized. The marriage scene is different but lacks logic. An overdose of romance and intimate scenes between Dhanush and Shruti is slightly a negative factor for family audience. The first half ends with a bit of suspense.

Second Half: The screenplay and direction fizzles out completely in the second half. The lead character's bipolar disorder is the major suspense factor unraveled during the second half. The conversations between Dhanush and his friend Sunder Ramu about the illness is portrayed naturally. The director’s attention to detail regarding the disease is to be commended particularly during the first few times the “hallucinations” is shown subtlely. A number of long loosely edited scenes in the second half make it a dragging experience. There are so many over the top melodramatic moments which could have been avoided. The director’s intention to emotionally engage the audience fall flat due to amateurish execution. There is a commercial fight sequence added which looks forced and slows down the pace of the film. The comedy and romance are abruptly thrown out in the second half making it a tedious watch.

Performances

Dhanush is impressive but his performance in second half has hangover of his previous films. Dhanush will get appreciation for his expression in school-boy scenes and his performance in the climax. Shruti's facial expressions are decent but her expressions and dialogue delivery in emotional scenes need a lot of improvement.

Sivakarthikeyan is excellent in his limited role. Seasoned actors Prabhu and Banupriya are wasted. Actress Rohini does her role well as Shruti's mother. Sunder Ramu gets a meaty role in the second half and lends support to Dhanush as understanding friend.

Songs and Picturisation

Kolaveri is picturized in an ordinary manner with below average choreography. Kolaveri song is a meaningless exercise considering that in previous scene they are shown as married. Arguably the best track in the album, Po Nee Po, could have been picturized better. On the positive side, Idhazhil Oram andKannazhaga are picturized in a fantastic manner. The background music is excellent.

Bottom-line: Unconventional but Below Average (1.5 out of 5)
