Film Reviews is Freedom of Speech: Madras High Court to Tamil Film Active Producers Association

The Tamil Film Active Producers Association (TFAPA) had filed a writ petition with the Madras High Court (HC) seeking a ban on the online film reviews, for three days from the time of a new movie's release in theaters. The HC has now dismissed this petition stating that banning online review of movies, would be equivalent to interfering with the fundamental right to freedom of speech and expression.

On June 26, 2025, Justice N. Anand Venkatesh dismissing the petition to ban online reviews said, “We are living in an era when people give negative reviews even about judges. Just go and see how they have criticized me on the social media. We cannot stop all those things...I do not believe in passing orders which cannot be implemented...There is not a single person or organization or country which escapes the review or comments made on social media.”

Observing that movie opinions differ from person to person, Justice Venkatesh also added, "In the social media era, awareness is the only solution through which the society can tread a balanced path. People must gauge movies after watching them and should not be swayed by what others say about those movies.”

The Judge asked TFAPA, "If you stop someone here, another person will do it from Azerbaijan. What will you do then?”. The high court justice concluded, “The relief sought for by the members of the producers' association in the present writ petition is unsustainable and cannot be granted by this court,”.
