Karthik Subbaraj directed Jigarthanda DoubleX is an upcoming gangster action comedy sequel to the filmmaker's 2014 hit Jigarthanda, and the film is scheduled to release in theaters on November 10, 2023 for the Diwali weekend. The movie just like its spiritual predecessor revolves around a silver-screen ambitious gangster, who ends up employing a budding film director to make a movie with him.

Jigarthanda DoubleX is more specifically about how this gangster aims to become the first 'Karuppu' (dark-skinned) hero in 1975 India cinema, when Rajinikanth the holder of said title in real life had not debuted yet. Karthik Subbaraj who has also written and produced the movie is a die-hard Rajinikanth fan in real life, and he recently revealed that had he been born decades ago, he would have made the film with Rajini and the Superstar's contemporary 'Ulaganayagan' Kamal Haasan.

Talking to X on Wednesday, Karthik Subbaraj shared that he would often share this dream with his ADs and one of them, brought this dream to fruition with a Jigarthanda DoubleX poster featuring Rajinikanth and Kamal Haasan. While Raghava Lawrence's Pandyaa character was given to Rajinikanth, Satyajit Ray's assistant Ray Daasan was assumed by Kamal Haasan's digital.
