Maamannan is based on a true incident! Has no community slander!

Maamannan written and directed by Mari Selvaraj is an upcoming political thriller that releases in theaters on June 29, 2023. The film starring Udhayanidhi Stalin in his last acting role is apparently based on a real-life incident that happened 15 days* after the release of the 2018 Tamil Pariyerum Perumal.

* Pariyerum Perumal set in Tirunelveli is about brutal caste oppression a law student faces, when a dominant caste girl becomes friendly with him. The movie released in September, 2018 focusses on how venomous a dominant caste community becomes, even when people are willing to accept inter-caste friendships and relationships.  A few days post the movie's release a brutal case of 7 Tirunelveli teenagers carrying out a planned murder made headlines in the region.  Master planner and executer was a 16 year old class X boy who along with his fellow dominant caste friends took the life of a man named Esakki Shankar who was supposed to wed his sister. The man belonged to a different community and even after parental acceptance from both sides, the teen brother carried out this unimaginable deed after being mocked by same community friends. His sister committed suicide post her lover's death.  It remains unknown if Maamannan has any reference to this incident, but Mari Selvaraj has said that the film is a spiritual continuation of another Esakki i.e. Vadivelu's character from the 1992 movie Thevar Magan

Pariyerum Perumal marked the debut of filmmaker Mari Selvaraj, and he made this revealition during the promotions for Maamannan. The director did not reveal any details though citing that it would be a spoiler for Maamannan. Film's lead actor Udhayanidhi Stalin on the other hand has said that though Maamannan is about caste politics, the film does not target any community or slander them.

Also starring Vadivelu, Fahadh Faasil, Keerthy Suresh in pivotal roles, Maamannan has AR Rahman for music and is a production venture of Udhayanidhi's Red Giant Movies. Prime Media is releasing the film in USA.
